It's easy to understand why lovers of older Hip Hop are a bit sceptical of the new direction the genre is taking. But if you are prepared to look beyond the macho, ''getting high'' bravado, then there are some great, young, MCs and producers appearing.
Black Hippy are one supremely talented group of MCs and producers. They are compiled of Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, Kendrik Lemar and Ab Soul. It seems every week a new Black Hippy affiliated record surfaces and more often than not, they're great. The interesting feature of the group is that each rapper offers a completely different style and lyrical content. Schoolboy Q's lyrics focus on the reality of the streets while Ab Soul's wordplay is more jovial and less contemplative. All of their personalities are on full display on 'Say Wassup' but it can also be seen in any of their other collaborations.
