Oneohtrix Point Never has always been quite a confusing entity for me; he makes droned out electronic music using ageing synthesisers and vintage technology, it’s interesting, varied and all very lovely. It’s nothing ground breaking. But for some reason unknown to me, he is really popular on blogs. It’s not even just your average electronic blogs, it is all types of blogs with different musical agendas. He has mass appeal, whatever your musical preference, and it is this that I find confusing.
It’s not that I think his music is bad, it is quite good, but why his music? He doesn’t seem to be particularly original (in fact I bought an Emeralds record and it was better) and his music doesn’t strike me as particularly hip. I suspect it’s because he is accessible, entry-level droned out electronic music, which can make you seem pretty cool to the unknowing if you are seen listening to him. Added with his love of cassettes and the 80s, he is basically a really cool guy.
It all kind of reminds me of when everyone thought the XX were great (I still have no idea why) But, somehow, because of all this I do find myself drawn back to his music. Respected music forums and wack music forums all love him, so I guess I will continue to listen to him too, to try and understand. (I am not a sheep).
